obit: Dorothy Donoho Balzer
Dorothy Donoho Balzer went to be with the Lord on February 12, 2013 after a long illness.
Dorothy was born in Uvalde County, Texas to Mary and Charles Donoho. She later moved with her family to Austin, Texas. She attended the Texas School for the Deaf, where she met “the love of her life”, Leon Balzer. They married in Austin in 1943 and moved to the Balzer farm in, Driscoll, Texas.
Dorothy and Leon were active with the Corpus Christi Deaf Center, providing volunteer support in many of the activities. She was an accomplished artist and at one time conducted an Arts and Craft Class at the Center. She had a strong interest in sewing and made most of her own clothes.
She was a member of River Hills Baptist Church, having accepted Jesus as her Savior thru the deaf ministry, led by Bro. John Price.
Dorothy loved her family and was blessed to have added family the last few years of her life. She was cared for and loved so specially at Lilly’s Home in Robstown, by Lilly Flores, Diana Moreno, Yolanda Luna, Mary Reyes, Rose Leal, and Delissa Cabrieles.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leon, a brother, Charles and a sister, Elmira Lamar.
She is survived by one son, William Van Balzer: a grandson, Brent Balzer and his wife Marlena, and one great grandson, Damian. She is also survived by a sister, Marilyn Donoho of San Antonio, a sister-in-law: Martha Jean Douglass Worsham, of Robstown, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Saturday, February 16, 2013 from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. at Sawyer-George Funeral Home.
The celebration of Dorothy’s life will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Sam Douglass officiating. Burial will follow in Robstown Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center at 5151 McArdle Road, Corpus Christi, Texas, 78411.
