Miles Joseph Podlipny, Jr.
(August 25, 1931 - January 4, 2008)
Miles Joseph Podlipny, 76, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend passed away peacefully on Friday, January 4th after a brief illness.
He was born in Rosenberg, Texas to Miles Joseph Podlipny and Lillian Tobola Podlipny on August 25, 1931. Miles graduated from Rosenberg High School in 1948. He attended the University of Texas and subsequently graduated from the Houston Technological College. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War serving in the Nancy Ordinance Depot in France from 1952 to 1953 where he repaired fire control equipment. Shortly after his discharge, he met his future wife, Elizabeth Ann Nebrig from Wichita Falls, Texas. They were married in 1956.
Following in his father's footsteps as a watchmaker and jewelry store owner, Miles soon opened Podlipny Jewelry in downtown Rosenberg where he worked until his retirement in 1995.
Throughout his lifetime, Miles has been a collector. As a member of the National Watch and Clock Collectors Association of America, he collected watches and clocks. Following his retirement from the jewelry business, Miles collected antique woodworking planes. He relished finding one of his tool 'treasures' at local garage sales each Friday and Saturday morning for many years. His wife and daughters enjoyed saying that Miles was 'plane' crazy.
Miles' five grandchildren often took advantage of the fact that "Papa can fix anything!" Broken treasures delivered by tiny hands were lovingly repaired and returned at the soonest opportunity.
Miles and Ann (who retired as laboratory director at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital) enjoyed retirement together as they strengthened their relationships with their family and friends. Miles cherished his morning and afternoon coffee breaks with his many friends in the community. He and Ann also treasured their special dinner club friends of 50 years.
Miles was preceded in death by his parents, Miles Joseph Podlipny and Lillian Tobola Podlipny.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years, Elizabeth Ann Podlipny; his three daughters, Teresa Lynn Podlipny and Dale Kirk, Carol Ann Gaas and husband Patrick, Laura Beth Heideman and husband Randy; five grandchildren Julia Gaas, Emma Gaas, Zachary Heideman, Katie Heideman, and Mason Heideman; sister Joyce Podlipny Herold and husband Laurance; and nephew Evan Herold.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 8th at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1512 Louise St. Rosenberg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Trinity Lutheran Church would be appreciated by the family. Please sign the online guest book available at www.garmanycarden.com.
