      VICTORIA - Sadie Lala Smajstrla passed away July 8, 2012.

       

      She was born October 5, 1914, in Placedo Junction, Texas, to the late Otto Lala and Mary Mikeska Lala. She married her dearly beloved husband Edwin J. Smajstrla on December 25, 1938, at the parsonage of the First English Lutheran church by the late Rev. J.C. Felger and was preceded in death by Edwin on December 14, 2008 after 70 years of marriage within eleven days. She attended Placedo Public School, Patti Welder High School and Victoria Junior College where she attained her Elementary School Teachers Certificate. Sadie and Edwin were farmers in their youth and later owned and operated the Placedo Food Store for 13 years. During those years Sadie became Postmaster of Placedo Junction, Texas for 11 years and Edwin was Postal Clerk. She was instrumental in changing the name from Placedo Junction to only Placedo, Texas. She resigned her Postmaster position to join her husband in the cotton ginning business in 1954 of which she was bookkeeper and office manager of the Gulf Coast Gin at Port Lavaca and the Victoria County Gin in Victoria both which they owned and operated and also the Hartzendorf Gin in West Sinton, after Edwin returned from WWII after 3 years of Navy service. After 22 years in the cotton ginning business they retired and enjoyed their Hereford cattle ranch on Lower Mission Valley Road in Victoria. Sadie was a member of the SPJST Fraternal Lodge of Victoria for 72 years (since 1938) of which she served as youth leader for several years. Sadie was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church.

       

      In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Mary Crews and one brother, Gilbert Otto Lala.

       

      She is survived by her nephews and niece; Dr. Garland Lala (Ann), Randy Crews (Carol) and Sandy Hancock (Mark); 2 great nephews; 4 great-nieces; 2 great-great nephews and 2 great-great-nieces.

       

      A time of visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at the Rosewood Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Monday, July 16, 2012, at the Rosewood Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Kisiah officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

       

      Pallbearers will be Garland Lala, Randy Crews, Mark Hancock, Travis Hancock, Weldon Holmes and Eric Fassnidge.
