      Name: Richard E. Smidovec, 81

Died: December 10, 2011, in Columbus, Texas

Richard E. Smidovec was born in Fayetteville, Texas on July 4, 1930 to Richard and Vlasta (Machala) Smidovec. He spent his days as a youth working on farms for anyone in need of help and during long winter nights hunting and trapping for furs, which meant new boots and a flannel shirt to keep him warm. For his education, he attended Santa Anna School near Ellinger, Texas and a small school at Ross Prairie.

In April 1948 with the support of his father and only being 17 years of age joined the United States Army. After his training in 1950 he served until 1952 at Fort Lewis in Washington during Korean War. Richard then took his discharge in November 1952 and joined the United States Air Force. He did his training at a tech school and was then assigned to Kelly Air Force Base located in San Antonio, Texas. There Richard met the love of his life Lou Ellen Chance, from Hilden, Oklahoma. They were later married on March 18, 1958 in Guadalupe County. In 1959 he was then assigned to duty on Okinawa Island where accompanied by his wife they spend three years. Richard and Lou Ellen then returned back to the United States and he served his duty at Travis Air Force Base in California. His last overseas assignment was in Thailand where he spent one year in support of the Vietnam War. After coming back he received an assignment at Vandenberg Air Force Base where in 1971 he would retire from. After retiring, pursing his love of fishing and hunting he and Lou Ellen purchased land in Arkansas where they lived for almost 20 years until returning to Texas in 1989. Experiencing health problems he and his wife moved to Jourdanton Texas to be close to the military hospital and his close friends David and Connie Manges. Sadly in 1999 Richard lost his wife causing him to move back to Ellinger to be closer to family members.

Richard and Lou Ellen were members of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellinger. He was also a life time member of the Disabled Veterans and the American Veterans of Foreign Affairs. Richard is preceded in death by his father, mother, and two brothers. He loved his family and friends but also had a special place in his heart for Jimmie, Linda, and Kimberly Smidovec for everything did for him and the times they spent together, he loved them very much.
