GARLAND --  The Rt. Rev. Monsignor Charles W. Smid, 58 (or 68), pstor of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Garland, died here Thursday night.

Father Smid attended grade school in his native Czechoslovakia before he came to the United States at age 18.  He had been pastor of Good Shepherd since Feb. 26, 1954.

Father Smid attended St. Procopius Academy and College in Lisle, Ill., then spent three years at St. John Seminary in Little Rock, Ark., and two years at Kendrick Seminary in St. Louis, Mo.  He was ordained in St. Louis and served first at Immaculate Conception Parish in Denton, then Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Abbott, Hill County, before coming to Garland.

Survivors include a brother and four sisters who live in Czechoslovakia.

Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday in Good Shepherd Church.  Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 7:45 a.m. Saturday in Good Shepherd, and the casket will be taken to Sacred Heart Cathedral for a Solemn Requiem Mass at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.  Burial will be in Calvary hill Cemetery.
