Douglas Charles Skokna, 65, of Kerrville, passed away at home on Tuesday, November 13. He was born in Maplewood, New Jersey, to Edward and Ethel Skokna on September 29, 1947. He married Arlene "Arby" Skokna on April 19, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey.

Doug attended Columbia High School in Maplewood. He went on to graduate with a bachelor of science in Chemical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (then known as Newark College of Engineering). Doug worked as a chemical engineer, plant supervisor, and executive for Conoco, DuPont, and Vista for 36 years. During his career, he lived in Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, and Texas, where he made many friends. In his later working years, he operated his own investment firm in Texas.

He was involved in the Jaycees, the Boy Scouts of America, and Kerrville’s Symphony of the Hills (where he served on the Board of Directors), among other organizations. In addition to these activities, Doug most enjoyed spending time with family and friends and his travels around the world.

As his dear friend Martha said, "He was not only a gentleman, but also a gentle man."

Doug is preceded in death by his parents and older brother, E.J. Skokna. Doug is survived by his wife, Arlene; son Christopher Skokna, daughter-in-law Julie Hartman Skokna, and twin grandsons Charlie and Matthew of Baltimore, Maryland; and son Scott Skokna, daughter-in-law Emily Schneider Skokna, and grandsons Edison and Elliott of Katy, Texas.

Doug’s family and friends celebrated his life on Friday, November 16, at a lunch at Grape Juice in Kerrville.

Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society or Peterson Hospice. Doug’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Drs. Barrington and Hernandez of Kerrville and Pagliara of MD Anderson Cancer Center. The family would also like to thank everyone at Peterson Hospice.
