Dorla Deane Schriewer Buff, age 74, died Sunday, March 11, 2012 in a Sugar Land hospital following complications resulting from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Oct. 25, 2011. Dorla was born July 9, 1937 to parents Ernest M. and Georgia “Jackie” Sabrsula Schriewer in Boling. She had two siblings, brother E. G. “Ernie” Schriewer and sister Patricia Anne Schriewer Shaw.
After graduating from Boling High School, she married Bobby Lee Buff on Sept. 17, 1955. They made their home on the Cockburn Ranch in Wharton County, where they reared their three children Bobby Jr., Karen and Michael. In 1986 they moved to their current home in Wharton, after which she became a bus driver and substitute teacher for Boling I.S.D. Being a Jehovah’s Witness by faith, she was a member of the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Dorla is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bobby Lee Buff ; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Lee Jr. and Karla Buff; daughter, Karen Lynn Buff Garza; grandchildren Kelsi Ann Buff Phillips and husband Joseph, Zachary Lee Buff and fiancé Krystal Tonne, Karrissa Deane Buff, Kaitlynn Faith Buff, Kirsten Lynn Buff, Christopher Nicolas Garza and fiancé Christene Garcia and Michael Travis Garza; great-grandson, Riddick Ray Garza; nephews, Willard Troy Buff and Joel Heath Schriewer; and nieces, Kimmelyn Jean Buff Pesz and Someret Shaw.
She was affectionately known as “Grandma Buff” to many, including Tonya Garza Vela, Shaun Garza, Jason Garza, Lauren Garza, Casey Garza, Amadeus Fuentes, Doug Campbell, Daniel Gollinger, Clint Williams, Stephen Nelson, Greg “Tay” Flores, Sabrynna Flores and Hannah Flores.
Even though she hadn’t done so recently, Dorla enjoyed fishing, gardening and trips with her husband to West Texas and to visit their son and family in Hondo. Going to lunch with her best friend Diann Rieger was a much loved past time. She also treasured her pets Lucy, Tico, PePe, Soda, Sonoma and Sammie. She would take summer vacations visiting her sister Anne and exploring the sights of California. The Big Sur countryside was one of her favorite spots. She was preceded in death by son Michael Dean Buff and great-granddaughter Cambri Grace Garza.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Wharton Funeral Home.
She loved and enjoyed all of the Boling I.S.D. students who touched her life throughout her time as bus driver and substitute teacher.
