HENRY A. WELFEL JR.
VICTORIA - Henry A. "Hank" Welfel, Jr. passed away on August 27, 2012 at University Hospital in San Antonio.
He was born on September 18, 1953 in Shiner to Henry Sr. and Leona Jalufka Welfel. He graduated from Shiner High School in 1972. He then served 4 years in the U.S. Navy from 1972-1976 in Washington DC and San Juan, Puerto Rico and was honorably discharged. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville in 1980 with a degree in Criminal Justice. He graduated from South Texas College of Law in Houston in 1984 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. He was a practicing attorney in Victoria since 1985, and was currently serving his 2nd term as Victoria County Justice of Peace, Precinct 4.
Hank was an avid bowler, bowling on the Thursday night Sundowners League for many years. He was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church serving on the Church Council, the finance committee and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. He especially looked forward each year to helping Bar-B-Q for Luther Fest and cooking beans for the Boy Scout Fish Fry. He was currently enrolled in the Parish Ministry Training program in Seguin hoping to become a SAM and be able to fill in at other Lutheran churches where needed, and he was currently an active member of the American Legion. Hank will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Hank is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy Harbers Welfel; his daughter and son-in-law, Kara and Wes Janak; mother, Leona Welfel; sister, Pat (Marvin) O'Neill; brothers, Larry (Margaret) Welfel, Adolph (Gail) Welfel, Thomas (Sherrie) Welfel; mother-in-law, Iva Harbers; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Welfel Sr.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 30 from 5-7 p.m. at Grace Funeral Home. Funeral services with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria County Veterans Council, AL, CWV, VFW, DAV, MCL, MOWW, EX-POW, MOPH, VVA, and KWV will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 31, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 106 N. Deleon with Rev. Barney Matocha and Don Angerstein officiating.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Ryan O'Neill, Matt O'Neill, Landon Welfel, Christopher Welfel, Richard Welfel, and Luke Seidenberger.
There will be a private burial at a later date.
Memorials in Hank's name may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.
