      ASHTABULA Leon J. Mike Mican, Sr., 84, passed away Tuesday evening, April 26, 2011 at Geneva Retirement Village.

       

      Born September 20, 1926 in Hallettsville, TX to John and Julie (Kutach) Mican, he was a farm boy until joining the U.S. Army in 1944. He saw action in the Philippines during World War II before being discharged in 1946. He reenlisted in 1951 and served in the Korean War with his beloved 3rd Infantry Division. He obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class and received two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantrymans (second) award while serving in Korea, as well as other medals and recognitions for his service in WWII and Korea. He married Viola (Boyd) on January 2, 1954 in Ft. Meade, Maryland and they had lived in Maryland, Texas, and Ohio. He enjoyed CB radio (his handle being Tex), Cub Scouts, hunting and fishing, and growing tomatoes and cucumbers. Before he became ill, he also loved hanging out at Kardohelys Restaurant in Ashtabula where he enjoyed coffee, chicky wings, and conversation.

       

      Survivors include four children, Helen (Paul Smith) Mican of VT, Jo Rowe of MS, Leon Mican, Jr. of MD, and Bob (Valerie) Mican of Geneva; 9 grandchildren, Kayla, Amber, Patrick, David, Eric, Daniel, Mike, Jim, and James; 3 great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona Ziegler of Halletsville, TX; and two sets of loving neighbors who were always there for him: Frank and Carmella Vegh and Scot and Jan Dioneff, all of Ashtabula.

       

      He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Viola Boyd Mican on March 10, 2010; several brothers and sisters; and his parents. Private family services will be held.
