obit: Mary Latham Kainer
Mary was born Sept. 16, 1926 in Stamford, Texas, the daughter of Charley and Nell (Savage) Latham. She grew up in the Funston Community and was baptized in 1938 at Swan’s Chapel Church of Christ. She graduated from Anson High School in 1942, and married Johnny Charles Kainer on Jan. 2, 1944 in Stamford. They lived near Sagerton until Johnny enlisted in the U.S. Army. Mary worked as a telephone operator while Johnny was serving in World War II.
She also worked for Feldt Manufacturing Company, Stamford Memorial Hospital and for 14 years was Office Manager for the Charlie Stenholm Campaign Office. Mary was also a volunteer and on the board of directors for the Stamford VIP Center. She was a faithful member of the Orient Street Church of Christ, teaching children’s classes for many years. Before his death on December 30, 1997, she and Johnny celebrated 53 years of marriage.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband.
Mrs. Kainer is survived by a son, Keith and Cindi Kainer of Abilene; daughters, Karen and Jerry Jones of Brownfield; Kim and Ron Nonnenmacher of Elkhart, Indiana; four grandchildren, Craig and Lisa Jones of Borger, Lauri and Jarrette Schule of San Antonio, Kristin and Steven Cordero of Wichita, Kansas, Ashley Kainer of Lubbock; two step-grandchildren, Sally Okerstrom of Abilene and Renae Lewis of Abilene; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alvina and Roland Rinn of Houston, Pauline Barnett of Abilene, Bertha and Gene Bounds of Stamford, Meta Kupatt of Stamford; special friend, Donna Davis of Haskell; aunt, Syble Young of Abilene; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
