July 5: Today is a National Holiday in the Czech Republic

The Day of Slavic Missionaries Cyril and Methodius

The two Byzantine Greek brothers Cyril and Methodius are very important for Czech history. They brought Christianity to the Great Moravian Empire in the year 863 and created the lithurgical Slavonic language and alphabet called hlaholice (the Glagolitic alphabet). They translated the Bible and contributed to the spread of Christianity and the Old Slavonic Language (staroslověnština) throughout Great Moravia.

There are six Roman Catholic Churches in Texas named after Saints Cyril and Methodius

      1. Cistern (Fayette County), on Hwy 95 between Flatonia and Smithville.
      2. Corpus Christi
      3. Damon, Brazoria County,
      4. Dubina. Fayette County between Weimar and Schulenburg
      5. Granger
      6. Marak  Milam County near Cameron
      7. Shiner

July 6: Tomorrow is also a National Holiday

Anniversary of the execution of Jan Hus (John Huss)

Jan Hus was a significant Czech religious reformer who was burned at the stake in 1415. His death sparked the Hussite wars of the 15th century.

The Bohemian Brethren Church in Texas originated with Jan Hus.
