obit: Elsie Annie Janota Terry Theis
- On Monday, December 7, 2010, Elsie Annie Janota Terry Theis, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away. She had rare intelligence, dignity and grace. She always helped others, even when it meant she would do without.
Elsie was born on May 7, 1922 in Gonzales, Texas to Steve and Francis Janota.
In 1925 the family moved to Taylor, Texas where Elsie and her brother, Alvin, went to Tenoil School for two years. They then continued their education at St. Mary's Catholic School, where Elsie graduated in May of 1939 as Salutatorian. Upon graduating from the Dirlan Drayhouse Business School in Austin Texas in 1940, she was employed for two years as county bookkeeper in Georgetown, Texas. Then when Camp Hood opened she was hired as a Secretary for Ordnance. She worked there until 1947, at which time she married Philip B. Terry, and then resided in San Gabriel, TX.
Elsie and Philip lived in Houston from 1951 until he retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1977. They returned to San Gabriel and built a home, which they shared until 1992 when Philip passed away. Elsie was an active member of her community. She was a long time member of SPJST, the VFW Auxiliary, and St. Mary's Catholic Church. In 1997, she married long time friend Oscar E. Theis. They spent many happy years together before her passing.
Elsie is survived by her husband, Oscar E. Theis, of San Gabriel, TX; brother, Alvin S. Janota of San Antonio; 2 sons and their spouses: Clayton Terry, and wife, Darby, of Cypress, TX, Stephen Terry and wife, Lia, of Littleton, CO; 4 grandchildren: Heather Terry-Taylor and husband, Ron, of Fountain, CO; Amber Terry Childers and husband, Brian, of Grand Prairie, TX; Shawn Terry and wife, Myra, of Cypress, TX; Justin Terry of Hollywood, CA; and 3 great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Sarah Childers of Grand Prairie, TX, and Athena Terry of Cypress, TX.
Elsie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Francis and Steve Janota, sister Bessie Janota; husband Philip Terry; and great-granddaughter Emily Rain Taylor.
Visitation will be held Friday, December 17th from 4 to 6 p.m. at Condra Funeral Home, 503 Talbot Street, Taylor, TX. A Rosary Service will follow at 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, December 18th, at 11am, St. Mary's Catholic Church. A graveside service follows at the Taylor City Cemetery.
