Joseph Frank Kuban (1950 - 2009)Joe Kuban, the science department chair and teacher of ecology for Nolan Catholic High School, died Thursday, June 4, 2009.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Nolan Catholic High School, the Rev. Oscar Vasquez, S.M., celebrant. A vigil service will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at Nolan. Sister Rosemary Stanton will preside. Sunrise Drive, Tucson, Ariz. 85718.Joseph Frank Kuban, Ph.D., was born May 15, 1950, in Fort Worth, son of Albina Novak and Joseph Frank Kuban Sr. A 1968 graduate of Nolan Catholic High School, Joe earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from the University of Texas at Arlington. He earned a doctorate in biology with an emphasis in ecology from Syracuse University.Dr. Kuban began teaching at Nolan in 1974 and continued until his death. He was diagnosed with Lou Gerhig's disease (ALS) in September 2006. During his time at Nolan, Dr. Kuban conducted field biology research with his students in Port Aransas; Big Bend; the Costa Rican rain forest; Peru; the Cayman Islands; Beavers Bend, Okla.; and Fort Worth's Tandy Hills Park. While in Costa Rica, he and his students helped develop and support a local school in Tortuguero, enabling students to stay in their own village for their education. Dr. Kuban's passion for the environment influenced many of his students to enter the field of ecology.Survivors: His wife, DeLane; sons, Matthew Kuban and wife, Michelle, Michael Kuban, Zachary Lucado and wife, Jennifer, and Jared Lucado and wife, Whitney; grandsons, Sam Kuban and Jake and Greyson Lucado; siblings, Frank Kuban and wife, Janie, John Kuban and wife, Becky, Martin Kuban and wife, Linda, and Annette Watson and husband, Ronny; DeLane's family, Faye Bearden, Leighton Bearden and wife, Donna, Karen Sandlin and husband, Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews.Fort Worth Star Telegram
