      San Antonio Express-News (TX) - December 10, 2008

Deceased Name: Judith (Judy) Makovy SLATE

Judith (Judy) Makovy Slate passed away on December 5, 2008 after a long illness. During this difficult time she was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She always had a smile and an upbeat attitude and was ready to pick up and go anywhere, anytime.

Judy was born in Floresville, Texas on June 7, 1944 to Joe Peter Makovy and Sally Kopecki Makovy Murks. She graduated from Luther Burbank High School in 1962 and from Texas State College in 1967 with degrees in Biology and English. After graduation, Judy worked at Biomedical Research Center at Southwest Foundation for Research and Education with small animals. She married William Blanchard Slate on July 20, 1968. Although Judy spent most of her married life in Michigan, her heart was always in Texas. After her husband's death she returned to her roots in San Antonio where she worked at the University of Texas until her retirement in 2007. Judy enjoyed music, sang in various choirs and loved playing her piano. Her varied interest included animals (she had several); creative writing, her cottage on Wee Island in the Thousand Islands, yard sales, and spending fun time with her many friends.

Judy leaves behind her beloved children, Julie Kormos (Jaime) and Paul Slate (Fort Worth), Jenny Slate (Houston) and one grandchild, Caitlyn Taylor Kormos. She also leaves behind James Slate (Sally), Mary Havranek (Rich) with nephews, great nephews and great nieces as well as many beloved first cousins and extended family. Her family and friends will miss her greatly but will always remember the wonderful times they spent with her.
