Shiner Gazette, 15 Nov 1905 , Halletsville column
The Joe Stefka murder case is now on trial. Almost two days were consumed in selecting the jury, which was finally secured and is composed of the following men: C F Pagel Jr, Jacob Tomasko, R B Tuttle, E Leist, T Y Hill, W W McMurry, Barry McDonald, J W Sartain, T J Reed, H A McBride, Tom King and Fritz Rathpen. Quite a number of Shiner people are here as witnesses in the case and to learn the facts in the case by all, and in case this trial should result in a mistrial, the venue of the case will probably be changed to another county. The opinion of outside people is very conflicting as to the guilt or innocence of the defendant. However, as the jury is composed of strictly honest men, their verdict will not be questioned.
Shiner Gazette, 15 Nov 1905
This is the fifth and last week of district court. The Stefka case, the Neumann brothers’ case and several other cases remain to be tried, so that it will consume the entire week. A great many Shiner people will be in attendance.
