      GILLESPIE YOUTH DROWNS

FREDERICKSBURG -- Mark Svatek, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Svatek, 106 Peach St., drowned in the Llano River Sunday afternoon during a family outing at the Benno Ischar Ranch, 30 miles west of here.

The youth, who only last Friday had returned from his first semester of study at St. Edwards, drowned in the swift current after diving in to retrieve a box of fishing flies which had fallen in the river.

The drowning occurred about 3 p.m. and his body was recovered in about 20 feet of water four hours later by volunteers and officers from Fredericksburg and Mason who assisted in the search.

Young Svatek was a graduate of St. Mary's High School of Fredericksburg where he was a star athlete.  After high school he had spent six months in the army reserve before entering college.

Funeral services were pending Sunday night at Schaetler Funeral Home.
