      E.W. "Cotton" Slovacek, 90, passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008.

       
      Funeral: 10 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Garden Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
       
      Gene was born Sept. 8, 1918, in Caldwell. He attended high school in Caldwell and El Campo, and received a master's degree from the University of Texas after serving as a major in the U.S. Air Force.
       
      In 1954, he started his business, Sports Publications, which was highly respected for more than 30 years.
      Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann, in 1969.

       
      Survivors: Sons, Gary Slovacek and Randy Slovacek and his life partner, Michael Caprio; sister-in-law, Gladys Slovacek; niece, Shannon Slovacek; nephews, Deane Slovacek and Bob Slovacek and their families; companion of many years, Betsy Longdon; and a host of loving friends.
