      Franz Joseph was the Emperor, with his nephew, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand as heir apparent in 1907.
       
      It was the Archdukes assassination in 1914 that touched off a series of events that led to World War I. Franz Joseph died while still emperor in 1916 at the age of 86, having reigned for 68 years.
       
      And of course it was the end of WWI that led to the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and this is when Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were formed and given their first taste of true autonomy in nearly 400 years.
