Edward Joseph Mateja was born in Bellville on Oct. 4, 1949 and died in San Felipe on March 9.

Ed grew up in San Felipe, where he and his family farmed cotton and other crops.  He was a man with an amazing work ethic, which he carried with him throughout his life.  He graduated from Sealy High School, where he played for the Sealy Tiger football team.  He worked for Austin County for quite a few years and later for Koy Concrete.  Recently, he ran his own business, Fences by Ed Mateja.

Ed loved and appreciated the gifts and beauty of nature.  Never far from the Brazos River, he spent countless hours in the woods with his beloved English coonhounds.  He will be remembered for his unique sense of humor, his warmth, sincerity and undying loyalty to the people he cared about.

He is survived by his wife Marianne; children, Ted and Amanda; step children, Mandi Powell and Marti Brown; sisters, Barbara Kmiec, Doris Starkey and Dee Herman; aunt, Mildred Blakey; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Jr.; and his parents, Frank and Martha Mateja.

Graveside services were March 12 at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with Father Thuy Nguyen officiating.  Funeral services were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville.
