      Ethel Gavranovic died Saturday, July 14, 2007 in Wharton at age 90 after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 1, 1917 in Floresville to Czech immigrants Adolph Heinrich and Annie Shimicek Heinrich. The family moved to El Campo when Ethel was an infant.

      Her birth name was Stephanie Heinrich. A grade school teacher gave her the moniker "Ethel" as a child, which stuck with her the rest of her life. She married Frank Gavranovic in 1932. They lived briefly in Hungerford before moving to Burr outside of Wharton. The couple supported themselves on their family farm raising cotton and corn with their four sons. She was married for 45 years until her husband died in 1978. She was a widow the remainder of her life.

      Mrs. Gavranovic was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and an 89-year resident of Wharton County. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; all her sisters, Mary Heinrich Bohuslav, Millie Heinrich Kutach, Annie Heinrich Kutach, Mollie Heinrich Zickhur and Elizabeth Heinrich McEntire Vacek; her brother, John Heinrich; and daughter-in-law, Fay Gavranovic.

      She is survived by her four sons, James Gavranovic and wife Patricia, Frankie Gavranovic and wife Meta, Mainer Gavranovic and wife Rita and Willie Gavranovic and wife Gladys, all of Wharton; 12 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; 17 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

      Rosary services were recited Monday evening at Wharton Funeral Home and a Funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 17, with Rev. Dominic Antwi-Boasiako officiating. Burial followed at Wharton City Cemetery.

      Pallbearers were Daniel Gavranovic, Mainer Gavranovic Jr., William Gavranovic Jr., Leon Kutach, Robert McEntire and Kirk Ware.

      Honorary pallbearers were Kyle Bone, James Gavranovic Jr., Marty Gavranovic, Tim Parma, Troy Taormina and Ryan Weaver.
