      MARY LEE ZAPPE

      HALLETTSVILLE - Mary Lee Zappe, 87, of Hallettsville, died Sept. 1, 2008. She was born on July 3, 1921, in Lavaca County, to John and Veronika Muhlstein Hlavac.
       
      She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville.    Mary attended Pleasant Grove School. She worked as a housekeeper in Robstown at an early age until she married William L. Zappe on Oct. 18, 1944 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville.

      Mary was a housewife and worked on a farm along with her husband for 55 years. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, canning, baking, and her two Border collie dogs. She enjoyed family gatherings with all her brothers and sisters. Special moments were with her grandchildren during the summer and also trips to Rockport Beach. Her special treat was candy, ice cream, and soda water.
       
      Mary is survived by her daughter, Elaine Mican and husband Gilbert; two grandchildren, Brian Mican and wife Emily of College Station and Melissa Mican of Houston; two sisters, Alma Brosch and Agnes Holik; and two brothers, Lado and Willie Hlavac.  Mary was preceded in death by her husband on July 1, 1999; her parents; three sisters, Albina Hlavac, Vlasta Holik, and Annie Boehm; and three brothers, Johnnie, Raymond and Franklin Hlavac.
       
      Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Kubena Funeral Home.  A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.    Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Rev. John Peters officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
