      JOSEPH P. OPELA

      SHINER - Mr. Joseph P. (Sodie) Opela, 73, of Shiner, died Jan. 30, 2008. He was born Oct. 29, 1934 to Sophie and Alois Opela Jr.
       
      He married Cecilia Barcak in July 1969.  Joseph spent 2 years active duty in the US Army in Germany. He retired as a welder from Kaspar Wire Works after 34 years of service. Joseph enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming, and playing dominoes. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church near Hallettsville.
       
      Joseph is survived by his wife, Cecilia; son, Patrick Opela and wife Catherine of Richmond; two daughters, Patricia Berger and husband Randy of Gonzales, and Rita Migl and husband Michael of Hallettsville; stepdaughter, Mary Schneider and husband Louis of Hallettsville; two stepsons, Claude Stoner and wife Catherine and Robert Huehlefeld; brother, Raymond J. Opela of Hallettsville; sister, Hedwig Dehart of Hallettsville; six grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
      Joseph was preceded in death by parents, Sophie Janak Opela (Dec. 23, 1995) and Alois Opela Jr. (Dec. 30, 1976).
       
      Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Friday at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited again at 10:30 a.m. with funeral at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church; the Rev. John Peters officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Church.  Pallbearers are James Barcak, Casper Janak, Jeffery Opela, Mike Opela, Ronald Opela, Nik Schneider, Harvey Steffek, and Clyde Weyman.
