Thank you Sir John. I printed out your instructions for when I do the backup. I had a good laugh when I realized what you did when it was all misspelled!

      Julie,

Definately back up your data for safekeeping.  I back my data to a CD.  Here's instructions from my FTM 16 online:

      Backing Up Family Files

To manually back up your Family File:
      1. From the File menu, select Backup ...
The Backup Family File dialog box appears.
      2. Specify where you want to store your backup file. The available locations will vary depending on how your computer is configured. If you're backing up to a floppy disk or writable CD, make sure that you have a blank disk in the appropriate drive. (Click here to review suggestions for backing up to CD.) If you want to back up to a different custom directory than the one displayed, click the Change button. The Change Filename or Directory dialog box appears to let you choose a location. Click here for more information on this dialog box. You can even make a backup of your data to the Internet.
      3. Click the Backup button.
Your family file is acked up to the specified location. A small window displays the progress of your backup. You're then informed that your file was successfully backed up.
      Tips:
If the backup file that you want to create already exists, Family Tree Maker may not let you create the file. This is a preference you can change in the General section of the General tab of the Preferences dialog box.
If you are backing up a large file to a diskette drive, Family Tree Maker will ask you to insert new diskettes as needed. When the backup requires multiple diskettes, be sure to label them in the order in which they are used.

Hank, you are sure if we get the new version CD, and install it, it should work with our current info?
Sorry for being a pest and asking the same questions, but you know, I don't want to lose our info.  How would the best way to back it up be?

Does anyone know if we get a new version and install it, will all of
our info automatically get incorporated into the new FTM version? We
      are using Windows XP.

Hi, yes FTM will transfer over all your data. I've upgraded about
three times now and have had no problem. Just be sure you first do a
backup before you install the latest version. Just in case something
      gets corrupted during the installation.

What good is information if not shared with others?
