East Bernard man dies in collision
March 01, 2007 - Posted at 12:00 a.m.
EL CAMPO - A 31-year-old East Bernard man died at the scene of a wreck on
U.S. Highway 59 at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday after the pickup he was driving
collided with an 18-wheeler.
A Department of Public Safety spokesman said Christopher Stavinoha was
driving a 2002 Ford pickup the wrong way on U.S. 59 when he collided head-on
with a southbound truck driven by 41-year-old Ryan Parsons of El Campo.
The 18-wheeler, towing an H-E-B van, rolled into the median after impact,
tying up north- and southbound traffic for hours.
Stavinoha was not wearing a seat belt when his pickup spun into the median
and he was ejected, the spokesman said.
Judge Tim Drapela pronounced him dead at the scene.
Parsons was taken to El Campo Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for
minor bruises and abrasions and released, the DPS spokesman said.
Trooper Royce Korenek investigated the wreck.
