Dorothy Lessing, 91, passed away on Sep 16, 2006 in Waco. A private service
will be held at DFW National Cemetery.
Dorothy was the first child born to Wilkie Susan Myrick and Thomas Jessie
Myrick Sr. on Feb 12, 1915 in Martin, Tennessee. She graduated from Jones
County Agricultural High School near Laurel, Miss. in 1933 and then studied
at the Federal Business College in Laurel.
When WWII started she took a Civil Service job at Camp Shelby, Miss. and
then transferred to Washington D.C. where she worked as a secretary for the
War Production Board. While there she met Wilfred Edward Lessing, Jr. of
Waco, a 1939 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. They were married on
Saturday Jan 16, 1943 at Christ Church in Alexandria, Va. She and her
friends walked to the church singing "What a wonderful day for a wedding,
what a beautiful day for you and me." Wilfred was promoted to Commander
and transferred to duty at the Naval Air Station in Oakland, CA. They lived
there until the war ended and then moved to Waco.
They loved and cherished each other for 63 years of marriage. Even when
they were older and had difficulty walking, they still had a gentle loving
smile for each other. Dorothy had a wonderful sense of style and beauty.
She was a gracious hostess with a flair for decorating and always happy for
you to visit. Although they had no children of their own, they greatly
enriched the lives of their siblings' children and were blessed with close
family and dear friends for many years.
They were world travelers. In 1961, they designed and built a motor coach
and drove it from Waco to Guatemala and back. They enjoyed the people,
diverse cultures and scenic beauty as they traveled to visit friends and see
They helped with Jimmy Carter's bid for the presidency and were Delegates to
the 1976 Democratic National Convention.
We celebrate her good life and mourn her passing. They lived an incredible
life together and are truly the end of an era.
Preceding Dorothy in death by 79 days was her husband, Wilfred Lessing Jr.;

Darrel; nephew, Charles Frank land and wife Kimberly and their son Jesse;
