      Charles F. Svatek, age 74 of Wharton, died Wednesday April 30, 2003 in Wharton. He was born on October 11, 1928 in Flatonia, Texas, the son of the late Adolph Svatek and Annie Tupa Svatek.

      Mr. Svatek was a Wharton resident for over 50 years and a former resident of Flatonia, Iago and El Campo. He married Helen M. Buenger on May 30, 1951 in Wharton. She preceded him in death on June 21, 1999. Mr. Svatek was employed as a maintenance technician for the Texas State Highway Department for 25 years until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, KJZT, Wharton American Legion Post #87 and was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus. He was a former CYO sponsor.

      Mr. Svatek enjoyed gardening, cooking, and attending his grandchildren's special events.

      Funeral mass services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday May 3, 2003 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wharton American Legion. Wake services will be held 7:00 PM Friday at the Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation after 12:00 noon Friday May 2nd.

      Survivors include his daughter, Patrice Volek of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Lee and Linda Svatek of Sugar Land, Dale and Rita Svatek of Needville; sisters, Mary Jane Foyt of Victoria, Angie Cummings of Sweeny, Lorraine Roesler of Bryan; brothers, Frankie Svatek and Bernard Svatek both of Wharton; grandchildren, Jessica Volek, Chris Svatek, Raeven Hoover, David Hoover, Trey and Candacy Hoover with expected great grandchild, Fayth Alyse Hoover.

      Pallbearers are Kenny Roesler, Richard Ramsower, Daniel Buenger Jr., Carlile Pond, David Wynand and Ed Baca. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Svatek, Timmy Carle and all members of the Wharton Knights of Columbus.
