He was born July 10, 1920 to Edward and Emma Cauthern Kacir in Hallettsville. He spent his early years in Shiner and attended High School in Goliad. In May of 1939 Gene enlisted in the Army. He served with the 8th Engineers of the First Cavalry Division. During World War II he served 2 years overseas, seeing duty with the First Cavalry in Australia, New Guinea, the Admiralty Islands, Leyte and Luzon. He was with the unit of the First Cavalry that released the first prisoners of war in Manila. He was a Master Sergeant discharged in August of 1945.
On November 22, 1945 Gene married Pauline Hiller in Cuero. They had five sons and one daughter: Eugene F. Kacir, Jr. and wife, Marjorie, of New Hartford, CT; Michael Edward and wife, Helga, of Worms, Germany; Kenneth Alan and wife, Helga, of McKinney, TX; David of Cuero; Thomas Paul and wife, Jane, of Midland, TX; and Karen and Dr. Caesar Ursic of Oakland, CA. Gene is survived by six grandchildren: Courtney of Cuero; Joseph, Daniel and Lucy of New Hartford, CT; Marcello and Clara Ursic of Oakland, CA.
Gene worked thirty years for Texas Eastern Transmissions, retiring in August of 1983. After his retirement he ranched full time.
He was a Catholic and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cuero. He was a longtime youth leader, serving as Scout Master of Troop 243 sponsored by the Knights of Columbus for many years. He was also a member of the Cuero VFW 3972.
Preceding him in death were his parents and stepfather, Henry Hirsch; his sister, Earline Vogt; and granddaughter, Kathleen Kacir.
A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, May 1, 2003, at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 2, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Lyons officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery under the auspices of Cuero VFW 3972 and American Legion Dinter Post 3. Freund Funeral Home (361) 275-2343.
