      ANNA ELIZABETH MERTEN

      Anna Elizabeth Merten, 79, died Jan. 23, 2001, in College Station.

      Funeral services were Jan. 25 at Knesek Bros./Etlinger Funeral Chapel
      in Bellville with Rev. Jim Foxx and Rev. John Arnell officiating.
      Burial was in Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville.

      Pallbearers were Robert Shelburne, Gene Holligan, Dave Shelburne,
      Wayne Merten, Jeff Merten and Donald Merten. Honorary pallbearers
      were Joey Forsythe and Jess Merten.

      She was born in Bellville Nov. 5, 1921, the only child of Gus Merten
      Jr. and Addie Schelburne Merten. In 1913, the family moved to Waller
      County, where they made their home in Hempstead.

      She graduated from Hempstead High School in 1939, took a course in
      business by extension and in 1941, was employed by county auditor
      W.P. Hermes Jr. as first assistant county auditor. She remained in
      this position until June 1, 1971, when Mr. Herms retird and she was
      appointed Waller County auditor, a position she kept until her
      retirement in 1983.

      She was affiliated with the Apolostic Faith Church from 1931 to the
      time of her death. She was a Sunday School teacher, church secretary-
      treasurer and youth director for many years.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Addie Merten Jr.

      She had no survivors other than cousins and their children, whom she
      loved as though they were her own, and some dear friends who have
      been a comfort in her latter years.

      Knesek Family Funeral Chapel in Bellville was in charge of the
      arrangements.
