      Joseph Frank Svoboda
      January 11, 1923 ~ June 18, 2010

Joseph Frank Svoboda, 87, of Dayton, was born in Goose Creek, Texas, on January 11, 1923 to the late Mary Bessie (Vyoral) and Joseph John Svoboda. He died early Friday, June 18, 2010 in a Houston hospital.

On April 12, 1947, Joe married the love of his life, Georgia Buchta. Together they had six children, whom he provided for and tried to put first. In his early years Joe enjoyed farming. He retired at age 62 from Exxon as a welder. The children remember him sitting around strumming the guitar and singing country and western songs. Deer hunting and fishing were sports he liked to do. When it came to fixing, building or making something, Joe could do it. His kids don’t ever remember a time he wasn’t able to make something work or build something he was asked to do. The Houston Astros had a loyal fan in Joe right from the start! He was a founding member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, had a good life, and will be missed by many.

Also preceding him in death were his wife of 38 years, Georgia Svoboda; brothers, Henry and Gordon Svoboda; great-grandson, Austin Swenson; and companion, Grace Finley.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his sons, J. T. Svoboda and wife, Shirley of Marion, Texas, Ervin Svoboda of Dayton, Alan Svoboda and wife, Margaret of Houston; daughters, Alice Svoboda of Dayton, Loretta Neal and husband, Howard Boatwright of Cleveland and Mary Jo Kuehn of Caldwell; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; sister, Albina Muller of Baytown; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.

Visitation with family and friends will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with rosary recited at 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 21, 2010 at Sterling Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim McClintock as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Palms Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Drew Crittendon, Jeff Gaspar, Eric Landrum, Curtis Moody, Vance Moody, and Josh Svoboda. Honorary pallbearers are David Muller, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ray Svoboda and Henry Svoboda Jr.

Final arrangements for Joe have been entrusted to Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main, Dayton, TX 77535, (936)258-2678.
