Lewis A. Hoelscher, age 86, of Temple died Friday, July 3, 2009 in a local hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Monday, July 6, at St. Lukes Catholic Church with Rev. Don Loftin as celebrant. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Sunday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 6:00 PM. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Josephs Cemetery at Cyclone.
Mr. Hoelscher was born December 13, 1922 in Westphalia to Fred and Annie (Frei) Hoelscher. He attended school in Westphalia and Lott High School. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army during World War II. He was in the 10th Mountain Division, Ski Division at Camp Hale, Colorado and was transferred to the Aleutian Islands in December, 1942 and to Northern Italy in December, 1944. He was discharged in November, 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Among the medals and awards he received was the Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Medal with Battle Star, European Campaign Medal with two Battle Stars, Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He married LaVerne Girndt on July 6, 1948 in Cyclone. He had been a resident of Temple over 60 years. He was in banking for 38 years retiring in 1988 as a vice president. He was a member of St. Lukes Catholic Church and a member of Knights of Columbus Temple Council #3444 and 4th Degree Assembly #1138 of Temple and served on the honor guard. He played piano and keyboard in different bands in the county for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Hoelscher of Temple, five sons, Floyd Hoelscher and wife, Patrice of Staten Island, NY, Kenneth Hoelscher of Temple, Mike Hoelscher of Morgans Point Resort, Douglas Hoelscher and wife, Lisa of Temple and Bruce Hoelscher and wife, Laurie of Cedar Park, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers, Leon Hoelscher and wife, Shirley of Westphalia, Bernard Hoelscher and wife, Annette of Temple, four sisters, Janie Kosel and husband, Harold of Katy, Mary Ann Holmes of Waco, Lucille Bruggman of Cyclone and Bertha Hoelscher of Temple.
