MILAM F. HERCHEKYOAKUM - Milam F. Herchek, age 84, passed away of cancer on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009. He was born on Aug. 9, 1925, in Yoakum, to the late Frank and Lillian Friedel Herchek.Milam graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1942. He joined the U.S. Merchant Marines at age 17 and served in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Theaters of war for three years during WWII.
He married Dorothy Marie Merian on May 31, 1947, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yoakum. They lived in Houston until 1951 when they moved to Yoakum. Milam was a salesman, grocer, and in various aspects of the leather business. He retired at age 75. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, was a member of the 3rd & 4th degree Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, and was an honorary member of the Yoakum Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors: wife of 62 years, Dorothy Herchek; daughters, Lindsay Davis of Universal City and Gwen Mozisek and husband Harry of Moulton; sons, Weldon Herchek of San Antonio, Brant Herchek and fiancé Liz of Kingwood, and Mark Herchek and wife Marsha of Yoakum; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ann Le Blanc of Victoria; and brother, Charlie Herchek and wife Annie of Columbus.Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. today at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
The funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Matthew Huehlefeld officiating. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Matthew Mozisek, James Herchek, Billy Ray Herchek, Jeff Murray, Jeff Dickinson, Jack Goodwin, Justin Moore, and Sean Miller. Honorary pallbearers are Members of the Yoakum Fire Department.Memorial contributions may be given to St. Joseph Catholic School, Accolade Hospice, or donor's choice.
