      Lt. Col. (ret.) Edward J. Mikes

      July 1, 2003

      FORT WORTH - Lt. Col. (Ret.) Edward James Mikes, 89, of Fort Worth,
      died Sunday, June 29, 2003.
      He was born July 13, 1913, in Shiner. He was a 1934 graduate of
      Shiner Catholic High School and then attended Southwest Texas State
      University at San Marcos. He was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army
      Air Corps and served in World War II. He received the American
      Defense, Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes,
      Rhineland, Central Europe and Victory Medals. He was a member and
      chairman of the Catholic Charities Commission of the Diocese of Fort
      Worth. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of
      Foreign Wars and the Retired Officers Association of the U.S. He was
      past chairman of the Volunteer Services Council of Denton State
      School and later a member of the board of the Texas Sate Volunteer
      Services council.

      Survivors: sister, Mildred Franta of Hallettsville; and brother,
      Alphonse J. Mikes of Shiner.

      Preceded in death by: wife, Fredreka Mikes; daughter, Helen
      Elizabeth; and sister, Leona Mikes Dusek.

      Vigil will be 7 p.m. tonight at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral
      Home chapel in Fort Worth.

      Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Cathedral.

      Graveside services will be 11:15 a.m. Thursday at Fort Sam Houston
      National Cemetery in San Antonio.
