      Summary:
Creating a thesaurus (a more formal kind of taxonomy to support indexing and retrieval) in many ways is similar to creating a back-of-the-book index, but there are also subtle yet significant differences that might not be readily apparent. This presentation compares key points, including creating multiple points of entry, forming hierarchical structure, and indicating related topics, with examples in all cases. Whether or not you have experience in either thesaurus creation or indexing, this presentation will be of interest.

      About the Presenter:
Heather Hedden is a senior vocabulary editor at Cengage Learning, a position that she held from 1996 to 2004, when the company was the Gale division of Thomson Learning, and to which she returned in early 2014. In the intervening decade, Heather worked as a taxonomist at various employers and as an independent taxonomy consultant (Hedden Information Management). At Cengage, she manages controlled vocabularies for the indexing and retrieval of Gale research database content and taxonomies for educational products. Additionally Heather teaches online workshops in taxonomy creation through the continuing education program of Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science and is the author of The Accidental Taxonomist (Information Today Inc., 2010).
