- Aug 4 12:46 PMThere is an online/web demo version of TemaTres that I had tried out two years ago for the chapter on taxonomy/thesaurus management software for my book. It was strange, though, that it allowed circular relationships. I tried again just now, and it still let me create both an BT/NT and an Use/UF between the same pair of terms. For that reason I dismissed it. Maybe the version you install on your own server is better, although I don't see why something as basic as enforcing standard relationships would not be included in all versions. It didn't seem as if the message trail included the URL:Heather Hedden

I haven't tried the current version yet, but as I recall the installation requires some IT skills -- you need to have a server with PHP, a web server (like Apache), and a database server (like MySQL) installed. There are a number of free packages available that will install the whole stack, which can make the process much easier. I've used one called XAMPP, for example. Once the prerequisites are in place, getting the software itself up and running isn't too difficult, I think you have to configure maybe two files and then you're in business.
Much of the documentation is only in Spanish, as is the source code, but with the help of web translation tools I didn't find this to be much of an obstacle. (Also, both the wiki and the software's user interface can be configured to display one of several languages.) If you have a problem and contact the developers about it, they are very willing to help, but the language barrier can be an issue. Once it's up and running, though, I found it pretty easy and enjoyable to use. I was also extremely grateful for the fact that it is free -- at the time I was using it, I had no budget for tools, and would have gone without any otherwise.

Thanks for following up on this Marijane.
I just had an aha! moment - this is free software - and you have used it.
We need more announcements like this!
We should have used some of this brain space to discuss the tool.
Can I ask, did you find it easy to install, etc.

I am curious, how do you all define "commercial", as in "commercial announcement"? I ask because TemaTres in particular is an open source product primarily developed by a library school in Argentina. Is that commercial? I saw the announcement on the Code for Libraries list, a place where open source software announcements are very common. I don't think I would have forwarded the announcement if it were for a proprietary product produced by a private company. (Nor would I have forwarded it if I hadn't used older versions of the software myself.)-marijaneOn Thu, Aug 4, 2011 at 8:17 AM, Alice <aredmondneal@...> wrote:
I am primarily a taxonomist who also wears a vendor hat, so I'm especially attuned to all the commentary about vendors' roles in the community and the importance of avoiding blatant promotion in this context. I know some promotional stuff has snuck in--I object strongly to extended posts about "new features". On this post, it was fine up to "Details below." I do not feel press releases or other commercial announcements belong in the discussion portion. However, such announcements have value and shouldn't be banished. They might be segregated somehow, with a link that people can choose to follow or not, and they should be limited in length and frequency.
Jenny, I second Patrick's thanks for the survey opportunity. Just needed a little space for a comment (opening a can of worms).
