      Why children?
      Why disfigurement only?
      Why destroy "hope"?

There is no reason that resonates with anybody's minds except theirs.
Just speculating, but i bet these were childless men who saw no hope for their own posterity or acceptance. Just as the 'Trench coat mafia" shot up the school because they saw themselves as victims striking back against their oppressors, and were applauded in all the blogs of all the others who saw themselves likewise victimized, these men saw the children as the symbols of their own oppression and disenfranchisement.
Just speculating. There can be no sure knowledge.
