I looked up the main website for osho. They have an old picture of
him on the website, when he looked about 30? Mighty good looking
dude! Sorry to hear he's passed on.

Other than his picture and the brief bio of the beginnings of his
movement, I don't know anything about the guy. Because this is a
discussion group mainly focused on philosophical daoism and the
pragmatics of it, could you try to compare the philosophy? religion?
of osho to philosophical daoism?

rgds,

hi....

i would like to give you a brief introduction about
osho before comparing his views and taoism....
Osho is not what you read in his biography...first of
all,he was intelligent to extreme levels...second, he
was a rebel...
THE REBEL is one of his books in which he gives you a
different conception of what it means to be a
rebel...donot read about him on the net...you get cds
and books of osho...that will give you an unbiased
idea of what osho was...the only thing i can tell you
is that osho might be someone worth critisizing but
definitely not worth ignoring...
wish you all a very happy new year...

hi....
i want to tell you something about what it actually
means to be a saint(in indian philosophy)...
we use a wonderful word called "sadhu"...sadhu means
simplicity...simplicity is most often
misunderstood...it implies simpicity in all
forms...even in thought...simplicity in thought refers
to innocence...where there is no thirst for
knowledge(knowledge corrupts the mind)...it means to
be like a small child...
donot fast when you are hungry...this is
simplicity...donot keep yourself awake when you feel
sleepy...this is simplicity...donot compete,donot
hunt(for knowledge)...donot do anything against
nature,your natural instincts(like sex)...cooperate
with your body...this is simplicity...cooperate with
your mind...and enjoy your very presence(like small
children)...

unfortunately the saints in india(sadhus)are
contradictory to being a saint...they are the most
complicated people around..their lives are very
complicated...it is very sad...

hope you didnt get bored reading this...and excuse me
for any mistakes(i struggle to write good english)...

Hi Lisa -
We knew Osho better in the states as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. There was a
big media circus around his commune near Antelope Oregon, his dozens of
Rolls Royces, and the political intrigues and even murderous schemes of
his followers. Lots of charisma, and, truth be told, some fairly
insightful writing with an eclectic's grasp of things.

Thanks for the wiki links, Jeevan. I found out just that, brad. I
also see where Osho claimed he was poisoned by chemicals that he never
recovered from by agents of "whomever they were." It appears Osho and
his adherents threatened the status quo in a place where those in
control like to stay in control. Who is to know what the real story
is, in the end...

What's intriguing in the reading about Osho is that he wrote 3? books
while under the influence of nitrous oxide. I can vouch for the
"inspired consciousness" under the influence of nitrous oxide, as I
have felt it many times while having my teeth cleaned (yes, it's a
combination of insanely sensitive teeth and being a wimp that has me
under the gas for teeth cleanings). As a matter of fact, the time
before this last visit, I experienced a divine revelation. Too bad I
didn't write it down :( It does make me curious to see what Osho
wrote while he was under the gas.

I'm more than a little leery of charismatic leaders of what I'll call
mesmerized followers, whatever the leader may say. In the role of
god-spokesmen, forget it. As human beings with a p.o.v. that may
resonate, I'm willing to give the guy a chance.

rgds,
lisa

Here's a sample:
Just as Freud's conscious mind, unconscious mind, and Jung says collective unconscious mind, I say there is a superconscious mind and collective conscious mind. To reach to the collective conscious mind they are going to the roots and I am going to the flowers.

But they're all interconnected and all the devices and matters are to discover in you, something which is simply watchfulness.

For example, I can watch my body--certainly I'm not the body. I can watch my hand: it's hurting, but I'm not the hurt--I'm the watcher. I can watch my thoughts, then I'm not the thought. I'm the watcher and I can watch even the watcher. That is the moment beyond which you cannot go and enlightenment comes.

Enlightenment is simply that you become so conscious, so full of light, that it starts overflowing your life, your being. You can impart it.

When one is enlightened one is conscious, but one is not conscious of consciousness. One is perfectly conscious, but there is no object in it. One is simply conscious, as if a light goes on enlightening the emptiness around it. There is no object, there is nothing the light can fall upon. It is pure consciousness. The object has disappeared; your subject has flowered into totality. Now there is no object--and hence, there can be no subject. The object and subject both have disappeared. You are simply conscious. Not conscious of anything, just conscious. You are consciousness....

...He is not conscious about enlightenment; he is simply conscious. He lives in consciousness, he sleeps in consciousness, he moves in consciousness. He lives, he dies in consciousness. Consciousness becomes an eternal source in him, a nonflickering flame, a nonwavering state of being. It is not an attribute, it is not accidental; it cannot be taken away. His whole being is conscious.

What is enlightenment? Coming to understand, coming to realize that you are not the body. You are the light within; not the lamp, but the flame. You are neither body nor mind. Mind belongs to the body; mind is not beyond body, it is part of the body--most subtle, most refined, but it is part of the body. Mind is also atomic, as body is atomic. You are neither the body nor the mind--then you come to know who you are. And to know who you are is enlightenment....

Enlightened means you have realized who you are.
Group of chaps I hung out at school with before I got a job used to discuss Oshos work to the death. . . Seems like so long ago. I have a transcript of "The Rebel" somewhere in my harddrive. I'll see if I can dig it up if anyone is intrested.

Heavy duty stuff for a description of a state of being that is so
light as to be untouchable. I can see where NO2 could induce these
rumi-nations (where's Jay when you need him?)

To float around as the self-realized being that you are may be smooth
and easy going and fine as-is. To be always in just that way seems
likes it could be tedious.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding. A peony that goes through all of the
seasons, it's shape shifting with them, is still a peony. Perhaps
realizing what you do is what you do because of who you are sounds
comforting.

I'd like to hear Osho's idea of what being a rebel is about. A
question coming to mind is that, if being enlightened means realizing
who you are, how do you rebel?

hi lisa...i would like to take your question of what it means to be rebel according to osho...i remember those lines in which he actually gives his definition of a rebel....
he says, a rebel is not a revolutionary, nor is he a noncomformist...a noncomformist is one who is not in agreement with something which is existing...which means that a noncomformist simply acts against the existing phenomenon...which implies that his actions will be based upon what exists...
...................and there is nothing new about that...you cannot expect any change here...osho's rebel is somebody new...who doesn't know what exists..nor does he want to know...he acts with his own conciousness, not against the present...his actions are based on his spontaneity...his instintcts...osho's rebel is natural...and when he says enlightened, he means matured...maturity according to osho is something to do with innocense...and being spontaneous...being simple....being natural...try to read the book or listen to the discourse yourself...you will get a much better idea...

yours trully

something which is existing...which means that a noncomformist simply
acts against the existing phenomenon...which implies that his actions
will be based upon what exists...

his spontaneity...his instintcts...osho's rebel is natural...and when
he says enlightened, he means matured...maturity according to osho is
something to do with innocense...and being spontaneous...being
simple....being natural...try to read the book or listen to the
discourse yourself...you will get a much better idea...

Thanks for the explanation, raghav. I have a question and a comment.

Question: where osho says, "his actions are based on his
spontaneity...his instintcts", and just prior to it said, "osho's
rebel is somebody new...who doesn't know what exists..nor does he want
to know...", what are his instincts based on if he doesn't know what
exists in the context of the situation?

Comment: humans may like to think they exist in a vacuum, but
no-thing is an island, outside of a context. I was just reading one
of my assignments and it references Fritjof Capra's book, _The Web of
Life_ and talks about each thing existing in a relational context with
other things, going on in larger and larger webworks until in
encompasses every thing.

I might see where osho would say that a person does act from instinct,
based on who they are, but the instinct would have to be fed with at
least a minimum of data, be it body language, tone of voice,
environmental context, personal position, or other verbal or
non-verbal cues as to the gestalt of the situation. Where osho may be
objecting is when the person thinks about personal gain, political
maneuvering, or some other hidden agenda before acting.

A person ideally acts from what they know in their heart-mind to be
the "right" thing to do. Maybe that's what osho was getting at?
