I went to this event last year, and there was a good reception of
the GLBT community. Both I, and my partner really enjoyed it. Not
only is Steve a good friend, but he is also a dynamic speaker. We
look forward to going again this year.

Loving in Fear is free literary event open to the
public. The event honors gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
transgender history month and the anniversary of the
Stonewall riots. Loving in Fear features:
David K Johnson, author of The Lavender Scare,
Kim Hanna, Hypoxia Zone playwright,
Steven Reigns, author of Your Dead Body is My Welcome
Event moderated by performer Apple Love.
When we stop holding hands in public places
When we change pronouns in the stories we tell to
When we avoid questions of marriage
When we omit the names of the places we socialize

About the writers:
David K Johnson is a visiting assistant professor at
the University of South Florida. He received his Ph.D.
in history from Northwestern University and has held
fellowships at the Smithsonian Institution, the Social
Research Council, and the Center for Gay and Lesbian
Studies at the City University of New York. His first
book, The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of
Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government, from the
University of Chicago Press, promises to change the
way we think about both the McCarthy era and the
origins of the gay rights movement.
Kim Hanna has a master's in creative writing from the
University of South Florida and a bachelor's in
creative writing from Eckerd College. Her full-length
play, Hypoxia Zone, will be produced by StageWorks
July 8-28, 2004 at the Shimberg Theater at the Tampa
Bay Performing Arts Center and is under consideration
at the Theatre District at the Cast in Hollywood, CA.
She is currently working on her novel, The 24th of
July. Kim is a member of The Dramatists Guild of
Steven Reigns, 28, is a graduate of The University of
South Florida Creative Writing program. His debut
collection, Your Dead Body is My Welcome Mat, deals
with abuses of power and offers a glimpse of life in
the margin of a society muted by fears and taboos. He
is currently at work on a second collection of poetry,
teaches creative writing workshops to gay youths, and
is Literary Director of The Center of Tampa Bay.
Tomes & Treasures will be selling books at the event.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The
Center of Tampa Bay, the non-profit gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgender community center.
