  • Hi Group, I know there's some expertise on this subject out there. My question ought to be easy :) - does anybody have any reliable biographic data or Antietam combat information about Colonel Henry Post of the 2nd USSS? Of course, Berdan is the name everyone thinks of first with Sharpsooters, and this is probably justified, so there's a fair amount of material available about him...

  • Dang, Todd - Your project indeed sounds like it has excellent potential for use on the ground. --- In TalkAntietam@^$1, TR Livesey wrote: > Brian, > > Very interesting. > > I'm actually working at a level higher--ideas that could be displayable ... And yes, I think there might be some common threads between our approaches. I'd say our fundamental differences in approach are the...

  • Hi Todd, Yes, I'm using the LoC provided MrSid viewer at home, but not the photoshop plugin. I'm a macromedia shop just now :) My approach to "optimizing" these for display on the Web is pretty low tech, really. My plan is to create a base map - a bitmap graphic - on the order of 500px square, for each of 3 or 4 major sections of the battlefield, and overlay vector-graphic symbols...

  • Greetings fellow listers. It sure is quiet :) I have a couple of items, if you're interested. I've been in a kind of hibernation, consumed by my day job for a couple of years, but I've got some of my life back for the moment ... so I'll just jump on in. First, I'd really like to read Dr Clemens' edited Carman manuscript(s), if available. I just don't know where to obtain it. Is...

  • Hi folks, I got some great help from you all a few years back on this question, but I can't get into my email archives. Please pick your brains and help we on this will you? I had an email correspondant ask the source of the word 'antietam'. I remember it being a local Indian word, perhaps describing the characteristics of the creek it names. Anybody? THanks, Brian

  • Hi Folks, Apparently a virus has hijacked "dunkerch@^$1" and has been zapping us here on TaslAntietam, so I have blocked that account temporarily. Will the owner please contact me via email directly _after_ disinfecting. I have blocked the ability for anyone to upload files to the group, also to help prevent further passing of viral content. Please let me know privately if this...

  • Hi group, for those interested and local to Sharpsburg, I'll be at the battlefield most of the day Sunday for this event. Anybody else? For visual recognition, I'm a tall, black-going-to-white haired, goateed guy. I'll prob have at least one son, maybe both, with me. They're 11 and 12, and impressed by noise, fire, and smoke. So am I. Have a great weekend, however you spend it...

  • I was just on the Park Service website and noticed an event of high interest. The events list looked way old, though, so I don't know if the following is still correct. I hope so ... I think I can actually get to the battlefield that weekend. Sat and Sun, [June] 23rd and 24th Artillery Weekend - Artillery firing demonstrations and special Ranger walks highlight this weekend...

  • Hi group, I have been wondering for years, but never asked, is there a published source for the Antietam Battlefield Board Papers and/or maps? I gather from the grapevine that they may reside in the secret back-room at the Battlefield Visitor's Center, but I'm ashamed to admit I've never actually asked to see. I'm thinking these would be eminently publishable, if not already. Also...

  • Thanks for the link Marcus. You have a very clean, readable site there - nice introduction to the War between the States. To bring it back to the subject of _this_ group: On your 1862 timeline, you noted "17 Sep - Union forces defeat the Confederate forces at Antietam, Maryland." I would suggest the forces met on that date, but the matter of who was victorious is open to debate...
