You are correct as far as I know about the roads. You recall that the 7th VA Cav arrived after dark and actually occupiedthe Ground Squirrel Church area betweent While's squadron and Hooker. They got quite a surprise at daylight, but got off unharmed. As for the "old road" I need to look at some of the very early maps in the WCFL, but have not done so. I suspect, as you surmise, that the road through Fairplay paralelling the turnpike is the old road, but I do not "know that" for sure. It sure does make sense though. The fellow that owns what was the Coffman Farm, more or less west of the turnpike oppositethe Middlekauff Farm has a early stone bridge on his property that is not connected to any current road.

Early day Sept. 17th CC maps show a squadron of the 3d PA at the intersection of two roads which look like the Sharpsburg-Hagerstown Pike and the road leading to Keedysville (Centerville) to the SE and Bakersville to the NW. That road to Bakersville continues on and eventually leads to Williamsport although Carman calling it the "Williamsport Road" seems curious. The crossroads at Jones's Crossroads further north shows the Williamsport Road which goes from Williamsport to Boonsboro. The 1859 Taggart map helps with the areas out of the scope of the CC maps. This road Carman describes as the Williamsport Road (today the Bakersville Road - Rt. 63) must have been the shortcut to Williamsport vice travelling north to Jones's Crossroads so he felt comfortable calling it the Williamsport Road. Also, I wonder if the road which parallels the Sharpsburg-Hagerstown Pike from Bakersville to Fairplay was the roadbed of the older Hagerstown Road which Tom Clemens mentioned predated the current one. It is interesting that the Hagerstown Pike is so straight which for 18th/19th century roads is unusual. Anyone have info on the course of the Hagerstown Pike prior to 1859 or the "Williamsport Road" which lead from Keedysville to Bakersville then on to Downsville and Williamsport? Regardless, it is clear that the 3rd Penn. Cav. did not picket Jones's Crossroads on the 16th/17th.
