A must do event for those of us who can do one of these distances or volunteer or spectate. From their website:

The Freedom's Run Events will allow runners and walkers to explore our land in events ranging from a challenging and scenic marathon connecting National Parks of great consequence--Harpers Ferry, the C & O Canal, and Antietam; a half marathon winding through Antietam and connecting to the C & O; a 5k and 10k crossing the Potomac on the Rumsey Bridge and along the C & O; a kids/family fun run touring historic Shepherdstown. All runners and walkers finish on the football field of Shepherd University.

Discover John Brown's Fort, The Armory of Virginius Island, Murphy Farm, and Packhorse Ford and view the fall leaves on the C & O Canal. Encounter Antietam Battlefield, arguably the best preserved land in our nation.

The pre-Civil War towns of Sharpsburg and Shepherdstown welcome the runners as they head to the finish on the campus of Shepherd University. The terrain will be a mix of rural road, hard pack C & O Canal Towpath, and 50 meters of synthetic turf at the Shepherd Football field finish.

The entire marathon course is encased in National Park Land, with some brief detours through country roads and preserved history towns that connect them.

The full marathon is point to point with a small net elevation loss. You begin with 4.5 miles in Harpers Ferry National Park, cover 10 flat miles on C & O Canal, over a country road to Antietam Battlefield for 2 miles, 5 rolling miles of Antietam, and finish with 4.5 flat to downhill miles into Shepherdstown.

The half marathon runs the marathon course in reverse as you head out of Shepherdstown into Antietam. After the full Antietam tour you connect to the C & O Canal to return over the Rumsey Bridge to Shepherdstown.

The 5k and 10k courses are out and back over the Potomac River and C & O Canal.

Participants and families will enjoy a day of post race festivities in Shepherdstown. The event is a non profit to support the Eastern Area Health Education Center, Healthy Kids Healthy Communities, and Washington's Way West National Heritage Alliance.
