Here are a couple different views. The housing is 2 5/8 , in diameter and slightly more than 1/2 thick. The spring inside is thicker and wider than the ones

It broke apart in the middle. I was thinking about haveing it welded back together and re-tempered, but I was thinking it would cost a lot..  On Wednesday,

I have and Underwood 12 electric which worked before putting in storage. Where do you live? If you are nearby, possibly we can work out a deal. It could save you a lot of grief!  Contact me directly - Rite2Aubert@....  Please send me a photo of your typewriter.  Bob Aubert

If you carefully remove the mainspring, caution will take your eye out, cut your face, hands.

you can heat the two broken ends with a butane torch about and inch.
Then bend the ends in opposite directions so they hook together.

Must heat the broken ends as spring steel temper will break.

Reinstall. I've done it before as experiment on Remington 10 still working.

No need to re temper anything. as it wont matter.. This should work if it can fit back in, should. Usually plenty of room. Its not pretty but works.

Or the two broken ends can be silver soldered flat that works too.

Then it can be regular solder too.  Must know how to clean prepare for soldering.  I've done that too.

It doesn't need welding there is not that much pressure.

Although I have seen some mainsprings breaking a lot in many places.
