- In his little book " Jewish and Christian Apocalypses" F C Burkitt says that "the Apocalyptic idea, the notion that the Kingdom of God was an external state of things which was just upon the point of being manifested", "that was the central thought of the earliest preaching of Christianity"," was (also the idea) that intoxicated the Jewish people in their wild struggle with Rome". "The kingdom of God at hand - that was the Christian watchword. A New World, a wholly new state of things is on the point of arriving: watch and be ready, and do not cumber yourself with your old possessions, your old traditions, your old affections."
Could there be a better commentary on the above verses and so much else we find in the Gospels ?
