      Hi everyone,

As I have a webcam instaled inside the nest, I have a Q about their
behaviuor. Let me first describe the way things happen. When the
male return to it's nest, it makes a few rounds before it gets
inside. Always acompanied by 2 or 3 swifts. At this stage the female
calls him and he answers with a screem. Then after it gets in, the
swifts which I mention trying to get in after him. As he gets in,
the female joins him and they both stick their head to the entrance
and they screem loudly together like saying to the intruders: "Stay
out". My question is, why do the swifts try to get in? Don't they
understand the nest is ocupied? Is there any other reason they try
to enter? How come it happens every day?

      Hope to get some answers.

      bye

        Dear Ilan,

        Interesting observation !

Most Common Swifts are very cautious about finding a suitable hole.

What would you do if you had such a big wings and you cannot do anything else but fly ? Would you stick your head first into a dark hole risking to be stuck into a short tunnel or pecked by another bird's bill ?

Non breeding Swifts (called "bangers" by David Lack) are looking for suitable holes by inspecting the occupied ones. They fly against each hole with noise (to bang) and they scream so as to oblige the righteous owners to respond. If there is a response, the hole must be ok! They memorise them and next year, or the year after that ... maybe ... if they are lucky ... one of the owners might die in Africa and then, they can get in to breed at last.

At my colony, I see sometimes older breeding Swifts wait a while before leaving their nest so as to avoid the screaming hooligans.

        Louis-Philippe

          Hi Ilan,

The 2 or 3 swift joining the male are young birds without a nest. They usually return later (in my country) than the breeders and the only thing they do is looking for a partner and nest. They find a nest by following the breeders, pester them and sometimes take over the nest if both birds leave the nest for a short while.
If all of this doesn't help them getting into the nest they eventually will look for something identical, because they have learned it's a safe place. Both breeders though will defend their nestingplace, if so required with fights that can go on for hours.

There are neighbourhoods in my hometown where all swifts have a nestingplace in exactly the same spot.
          Hope this answers your question.

          Best regards,

can look for swifts in Amstelveen as I know from your reports they

let them know so they can contact you and you can show them a nest.

                Hi Ulrich,

Well, I'm not completly positive, but it was the same before the
eggs were laid. The female stayed in the nest for the whole day
and the male returned as usual before dark. I after the eggs were
laid I saw them chage shifts at about noon so the other can go out
and get food. I'm not sure if the shifts are the same every day
as I'm not at home to see when they change. I will try to observe it.
So the bottom line is that after the eggs were kaid I'm not sure
who is M and who is F.

Difficult to watch, I guess, Ulrich.

I witnessed this in several occasions and it´s really distressing to see their desperate and restless search for their lost nest sites.

Hopefully you will resume soon your special relationship with them and enjoy again with their close presence!.

                        Best regards,

May 2nd I saw the first one in my neighbourhood, and yesterday May 3rd at 20.02 h the first one came back who has no home so far. It was one of the pair that occupied this box last year only. It made many circles in 3 shifts until 20.43. This morning until 07.30 I did not see it yet. Its rainy and 12°C.

                        Kind regards
                        Ulrich

                        Ireland    So thrilled that we
are getting reports of Swifts from across Ireland.  We saw
them in Antrim on 22 April when we met Brian Cahalane and
Mark Symth.  Then we saw  1 in Co. Mayo on same day at
6pm.  Today and yesterday getting reports from Tralee in
Kerry, Johnstown Agricultural Museum in Wexford, Roscommon
Town, Westport in Co. Mayo.  Will let you know as soon as
our live-stream from Castlebar's 11 boxes is up and
                        running.  Happy Days. Lynda

Yes indeed, difficult to watch. Here in a street next to my place a house was destined to be put down in August last year so I asked the town hall to take away the nest box after the season. But of course they did not destroy it yet and now a Swift is taking relentlessly the same route to get in the box that isn't there any more. I hope that it will find a new box soon. Anyway I couldn't take the risk to see the house being destroyed in the middle of the season.

I witnessed this in several occasions and it´s really distressing to see their desperate and restless search for their lost nest sites.

Hopefully you will resume soon your special relationship with them and enjoy again with their close presence!.

Yesterday the homeless guy came 6x between 16.20 and 18.24 to the house. It took 2 - 26 rounds to near the former nestplace. It began to try other ways to near the place/to check the situation, not only from the usual flight-in-path, but also from the right and left and from different angles. Similar we do, when we search lost things.
Today I did not see it until now (08.54 h), cloudy, but dry, 12 °C.
                            Kind regards
