    Hi all

34cm x 13cm and 17cm high. I’m thinking of increasing the size of these.
What size are your home made nest boxes?

    Hi there,

The internal sizes of the chambers I make are:

    38L X 18H X 28W.

It's long enough to enable them to stretch their wings while practicing the
"Push Ups". Wide enough so that the "Anti Starling Corridor" will not
prevent safe nesting. High enough to install a good CC Camera.

SWEET SWIFT HOME is built with this measures.

        Hi Mark,

In attachment a brochure that Edward made of our "Leuven-boxes". Measurements included.

These ones are made by the city of Leuven and put up by them for free for all citizens that live there.

They are very succesful and the more we have, the quicker they get occupied. Some 400-500 have been put up so far I guess.

        Hi all

On my gable there are two wooden nest boxes of a design I came up with. They
match the internal size of the Schwegler 16. They have an internal size of
34cm x 13cm and 17cm high. I’m thinking of increasing the size of these.
What size are your home made nest boxes?

The main reason is the mess of the nest boxes at the end of the season. They can be very wet compared to what I’ve seen in mainland Europe nest boxes which always look clean and dry. Maybe it’s our weather that doesn’t help? Every year chicks end up with dirty tips to the primaries and tail. This hasn’t stopped them fledging. Maybe it’s the high aphid and Chironomid food content that makes chicks loose?

I hope I’ve got my maths correct. The floor area is now 960 square cm compared to 442 sq cm floor space which is double the floor space. I’ll also put a 5mm ply floor inside

As I already mentioned some time ago, this problem occurs also with Starlings when they feed their young exclusively on Crane fly maggots (leatherjackets). The fluidity of the dejections in the nestcup obliges the chicks to fledge way too early.

              Hi L-P,
I note that the floor of the Leuven box is 95mm wide - that is even narrower than the Ibstock brick. Both of these designs are said to be successful. I have had good occupancy with boxes 100mm wide in St Mary's Ely.
German Swifts nest in rotten woodpecker holes 13cm diameter. In Lapland they nest in circular nest boxes not much bigger.
Could it be that the received wisdom that Swifts need space to exercise their wings is actually a load of rubbish?
Has anyone considered reducing the height of the Leuven box to, say 15cm, then the floor width could increase to ~12cm

Dick, the wing exercises start on the hole and then may spread over the rest of the box. The chicks do NOT prefer to place themselves in the middle of the boxes for the exercises. I mean it seems that the wings touching walls during the exercises is preferred.
                  Kind regards

                    Hi L-P,
I note that the floor of the Leuven box is 95mm wide - that is even narrower than the Ibstock brick.
                    Dick

Hello All, I find that the problem with drainage and "weep" holes is that they so easily get blocked with nest and other debris. I have even found tiny spiders nesting in them, their webs preventing any water drops getting out. My answer is to line the base of the box with a thin layer of commercial plasterboard. It is very cheap, and very absorbent. I tested it against MDF and plywood, and it absorbed drops of water much faster than either of the others did.Regards, Edward

Cement fibreboard (= soffit board) has similar properties. I once tested it with concentrated orange squash (simllar consistency to liquid poo) and it absorbed it quite quickly. Soffit board is about 4-5mm thick, thinner than plasterboard.
