I am in the process of converting the Lionel Giles online version to a
Microsoft Word file for use in one of my classes since it is in the
public domain and it got me thinking.
What is your favorite/best version of the Text?
Ames's version and Sawyer's are very scholarly and good, but despite
the criticisms of some of the translation, I find myself going back
most often to S. B. Griffith's translation. Perhaps some of it is
that this is the version I've lived with for the last 25 years, but in
some cases it is the knowledge that this version was written by
someone who was "on the sharp end" himself and led an elite unit in
action himself. His prose style is dynamic and stays in the head. It
is strange but true that a Marine general should come out on top in
prose (must have been all those bayonet drills <grin>)
