Re: [Stonehaven Genealogy] Kincardineshire Duncans
- I would be interested in any information you have on Duncans
of Stonehaven area. My ancestral line has an Isabella Duncan
who married a William Darling both were deceaced by 1861.
Should you come across anything at all mentioning the above
I'd be most grateful. I don't have very much to go on but I
think they had a daughter called Isabella and another named
I have started to compile a data dase of all Duncan event
records in Kincardine. My method to this point has been to
go into the on-line version of the IGI parish by parish and
extract the records batch by batch into MS Excel. This has
given me 2552 rows of data and is the end of Phase one.
Phase two will be to plod through the census records in an
attempt to fill in the gaps in the OPR records. It is early
days with this so far and although this shows some promise
I am begining to think I will not achieve as much as I had
hoped. There is futher work to do in the IGI with regard to
where marriages took place and where children were born.
This will show movement of people and should help fill in
some of the gaps in the OPR as well. Down the track I hope
to include death and burial records where these are available
and later still probate and land tenure records. Are there
any other record source suggestions?
I have had a look at a few of the OPR batches in the IGI for
Aberdeen and the first batch shows over 200 births. I can
also see from what I have so far that some families moved
into Angus and I shall have a look at that county as well.
I will be at this for some time yet.
I shall also do the same for the related female line of My
Duncan family. Namely Main, Caird, Sutherland and Thomson.
In the mean-time where is a good place to publish this data
to make it available to those who would be interested. I do
not have a website, nor the time just now to go into that. I
would sooner carry on with what I have started and move on
to-wards a conclusion. There will be a time when I may want
to have my own website, but I will wait for a better time to
The two interesting things which have shown up so far are;
the number of twins shown in the IGI ( I need to check this
in the Kirk Sessions Records. because identical christening
dates only suggest twins) The other is the uneven spread of
the family name. More in the north by Aberdeen and a pocket
around Stonehaven through Fordoun with a scattering elsewhere.
