OT Sunday morning jogs and Kasey Kasem
- I love going jogging on Sunday mornings. I seem to be able to jog for a longer time, and just find it very enjoyable.
I used to think it was because of the peacefulness of the day, or because I have more time on Sundays, but I think what it really boils down to the music that I listen to.
Like most cities we have a great oldies radio station. It's a bit depressing to think that the music of my youth is now being played on an oldies station, but that is the passage of life I suppose.
On Sunday mornings, they replay old episodes of America's Top 40 with Kasey Kasem, and I listen as I jog.
As I'm jogging, I get excited when I hear yet another song that I used to listen to when I was young, and it actually energizes me! The songs remind me of carefree youthful days spending hours outside on weekends, walking, riding my bike,or playing some kind of sport. These thoughts brought on by the songs make me actually feel like I have that energy again and I am able to go further and do more than I would usually do.
I'm sure that this is the one and only time that allowing my mind to think of the past is helpful in my spiritual life:)
Today's episode of America's top 40 was from May 25th 1974. I was 8 years old at the time. I know that 8 seems young to really be into pop music, but music was always such a huge part of my life, and those songs seemed to have imprinted on me.
As well there were 4 Canadians on the program today which made me even more excited; Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot,Paul Anka, and I didn't hear the 4th, but my best guess is that it was probably The Guess Who.
Interestingly enough, it was also 1974 that Guru came to my hometown and gave a lecture only 10 minutes from my house.
Unfortunately I was probably listening to Carly Simon or Chicago at the time of the lecture, but somehow I like to think that Guru's Light managed to peep through anyway.
So here's to Sunday morning running with Kasey Kasem and past memories inspiring the present.
