June 1, 1978 was the first official start of Sri Chinmoy's own
personal long distance running training. For years he had been inspiring
some of his disciples to practice long distance running and even to run
marathon races, and now he himself decided to practice what he
preached, as he always did. This meant that at almost 47 years old he
would commit himself to hours and hours and years and years of training
and racing mostly on the roads. As an excellent track and field champion
in his youth even a half mile was a long distance to him. Now he would
start training miles and miles every day and eventually run hundreds of
      long distance races.

It all started in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco 30 years ago.
According to some of the people who were present that day, there were a
group of disciples with Sri Chinmoy who had gone to a special Peace Tree
which had been planted there years earlier. After meditating there Sri
Chinmoy went out to the walkway along that area of this huge park and
started jogging. Then he had some of the students race along the grass.
Little did we know that this was to be the beginning of many, many
races, short, long and longest to come for decades. Still the races
continue and I am sure they will continue for generations. This was Sri
Chinmoy's personal vision, personal effort and personal inspiration
which has propelled hundreds of people over the years to lead a happier
and healthier life through the development of their long distance
      running.

If anyone can recall more about the precise chain of events or of the
races that day at Golden Gate Park, please contribute your authentic
stories here. To find out more about Sri Chinmoy's own personal long

Sri Chinmoy always liked to celebrate significant anniversaries. Thirty
is a nice, even, big number which is very significant when it comes to
the longevity of such an important manifestation as long distance
running. Although it may have just seemed like another spur of the
moment inspiration of the day with Sri Chinmoy, his vision of a
brighter, healthier and happier future once more planted a very valuable
seed which has blossomed forth a huge garden. And I am sure this will
someday become a giant forest of running inspiration and aspiration to
uplift humanity for generations to come.

      Runningly,

      Arpan
