Group Description

Founded in 2002, this world-wide group aims to revitalize the Spanish language and culture in the Philippines. Present day Filipino language, culture, traditions, and religion, have a Hispanic overlay. The Spanish language is a widely spoken language of the world in over 23 countries and Filipinos are behind in speaking their once official language. Membership is open to everyone regardless of nationality, gender, religion, or culture, as long as they support the Hispanic heritage in Filipino culture. Members could assist by teaching basic Spanish conversational words and provide information about Spanish culture. One group goal is to establish informal Spanish Conversation Groups in different locations where there is interest. Spanish was an official language of the Philippines until 1987*. Chabacano (or Chavacano), the Philippine Spanish Creole language survives to this day with over a million speakers in Zamboanga, Cavite, Ternate, and other areas.

*Official in the Constitution until 1973. Afterwards it was redesignated an official language by Presidential proclamation, thus Spanish remained official until a subsequent change in constitution in 1987. Philippine Presidential Decree No. 155 dated March 15, 1973 ordered, "...that the Spanish language shall continue to be recognized as an official language in the Philippines while important documents in government files are in the Spanish language and not translated into either English or Pilipino language."
