Group Description

The Somerset County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is comprised of volunteer Amateur (ham) Radio operators in Somerset County, NJ.

In Somerset County, New Jersey, ARES and RACES are separate. While members do have the option of becoming members of only one organization, membership is encouraged in both.

ARES was created by the ARRL not the Federal Government, as RACES was. This allows us to act independently of the County OEM. ARES has the ability to activate as an emergency situation arises..... We don't have to wait until a 'Declaration of Emergency' is declared, like RACES does !

Somerset County Amateur Radio Emergency Service provides emergency and public service communications to county, township, and borough offices of emergency management, disaster services organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, and public events such as walkathons and bikeathons. Communications will be provided when requested and as amateur radio resources are available.

The ARES District Emergency Coordinator for Somerset County is:
Keith Proskura KB2DXA. He can be contacted at KB2DXA@somersetares.org.

Somerset County is part of the ARRL NNJ section. The NNJ section coordinator is Steve Ostrove, K2SO. He can be contacted at K2SO@arrl.net

Because of security issues, you must be a member of ARES in Somerset County, NJ to join this group.
